At this week’s International Communication Association (ICA) annual conference in San Juan, Puerto Rico I’m pleased to join a panel on job seeking in and out of academia to share my experiences as a recent Ph.D. on the job market.

BlueSky Workshop: What Else is There? – Career Paths in and Outside Academia
Sun, May 24, 16:30 to 17:45, Caribe Hilton, Boardroom 2

Abstract
In times of tightening job markets for PhD’s, early-career scholars are increasingly considering career paths outside the university. Often these alternative paths are not discussed in PhD programs. This BlueSky Workshop gathers scholars with experiences both within and outside academia and presents their hands-on views on pro and cons of alternative career paths. The BlueSky Workshop is designed particularly for graduate students and early-career scholars that are exploring new possibilities for their future careers.

Below is a collection of resources I found helpful in my own job search, with a focus on environmental communication. In addition, Mark Coddington from the University of Texas-Austin has created a data visualization of 2015 tenure-track faculty  job postings in journalism, PR and media.

Lastly, remember that a professional resume is distinct from an academic curriculum vitae. For example, here is my C.V. and here is the same material reworked into the functional resume format (tailored to a Director of Marketing and Communication job posting).
